Reggie Fils-Aimé believes that Nintendo should rush with the Switch to match sales of the PS2 and DS, and considers that Big N does not compete directly with Sony.
He is one of the most important figures in the history of nintendokey piece to understanding the evolution of the Big N in North America. From the days of the Wii to the Nintendo Switch, Reggie Fils-Aime He has been characterized as one of the company’s most charismatic presidents.
His farewell to Nintendo in February 2019 was the beginning of Doug Bowser’s journey as president of Nintendo of America, who also retired to make way for a new generation.
However, Fils-Aimé is a great connoisseur of the video game industrythen Christopher Dring interviewed him on The Game Business. What does the former president think of the Nintendo Switch 2 phenomenon in its first few months?
”I certainly underestimated the Nintendo Switch 1’s enhanced content, which I found very appealing. The free content that comes with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription has helped boost the game. And of course, Donkey Kong Bananza was a key factor in its success”.
Also believes that Nintendo should bet big on the Switch, surpassing the DS and even the PS2and thus becomes the best-selling console in history. At the moment it stands at 154.01 million, slightly below the DS (154.02m) and a considerable distance from the PS2 (+160m).
”I think the end of this year could be your last chance. I don’t know if you noticed, but among their statements they mentioned that, from now on, all of their development will be focused on the Switch 2. The opportunity to reach this milestone is practically here”.

The former president of Nintendo of America was also asked about the commitment of third parties with the Nintendo Switch 2, a platform that has greater support from external companies compared to the Wii U or even the first Switch.
Games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Resident Evil Requiem, Elden Ring or Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade have been announced for the console, and titles like Cyberpunk 2077 are now available. But, Is Nintendo’s strategy comparable to PlayStation’s business model?
”Let’s be clear, Nintendo, in my opinion, will never position itself as a direct competitor to PlayStation. It’s not in their DNA. This is not how they conceive of the business opportunity”.
Fils-Aimé believes that The essence of Nintendo does not lie in greater graphical powerso they always bet more on own games and an experience for all audiences. Of course, he clarifies that this does not mean that sagas like Call of Duty or Resident Evil can come to their consoles.
”Nintendo, when designing its hardware, doesn’t focus on how to get the latest graphics chip or processor; that’s not your focus. But the Switch 2 chipset offers great performance”.
The former president also spoke about Xbox, which considers an external publisher that manufactures hardwarebut whose focus is publishing games. He believes that the Microsoft brand no longer competes with PlayStation, and I’d like to see more Xbox Game Studios games on Switch 2.
”I’m surprised Xbox hasn’t gone all-in on the Switch 2 yet when it comes to software. Certainly, some games could be easily ported”.
Each company has its own strategy and Gone are the days of direct competition between them. PlayStation continues to bet big with the PS5, Nintendo has just started the Switch 2 journey and Xbox is approaching a new generation with the latest developments of the Xbox Series X|S.
