A game that doesn’t age: reminiscent of Dungeons and Dragons
But what makes HeroQuest so special? Why is he still the king of dungeon crawlers after so many years? The answer is simple: it is adventure in its purest state.
HeroQuest is a one-on-one game where up to four players take on the role of brave heroes – the Barbarian, the Dwarf, the Wizard and the Elf – and enter dark dungeons to fight the forces of evil. The fifth player takes on the role of Zargon – or Morcar, for those more nostalgic –, the Evil Sorcerer who runs the game. He is the narrator, the one who controls the monsters, triggers the traps and, ultimately, the one who tries to make the heroes fail in their mission.
HeroQuest’s genius lies in its simplicity. You don’t need to be an RPG expert to have fun. In ten minutes, anyone can learn to play. The game takes place on a board representing the dungeon, which is empty at the beginning.
As the heroes open doors and explore the rooms, Evil Witcher places the impressive miniatures of the monsters –orcs, goblins, zombies, gargoyles…–, the 3D furniture –tables, chests, fireplaces…– and the traps. This feeling of not knowing what awaits you on the other side of the door is one of the elements that generates the most tension and emotion.
The game system is very intuitive. On your turn, you can move your hero and perform an action: attack a monster, search for treasure, look for traps, cast a spell…Combats are resolved in a very visual and exciting way, rolling personalized combat dice.
The attacker counts the skulls he drew and the defender counts the shields. If there are more skulls than shields, the defender loses life points. It’s a fast system that generates epic moments that anyone can understand instantly.
The game’s base box comes with a challenge book with 14 missions that form a campaign. As the heroes complete missions, they earn gold with which they can buy better equipment – weapons, armor, potions… –, which will allow them to face increasing challenges. This progression, seeing how your character improves and becomes stronger, is one of the most engaging elements of the game.
