2P Games and Nekcom announce the postponement of Showa American Story to 2026, but fortunately the game has already entered the final phase of its development.
One of the craziest open-world adventures we’ve ever seen finally won’t arrive in 2025and we will have to wait until 2026 to prove. It was already predictable, as Showa American Story hasn’t revealed any new features for some time, despite maintaining the same release window.
This particular game from 2P Games and Nekcom Games takes place in the completely ”Japanese” United States, as young Chouko Chigusa travels across the country on her motorcycle in search of new experiences.
Its creators define it as an open-world JRPG with a post-apocalyptic theme and dramatic touchesand it certainly aims to be a curious mix of surreal humor and pure and simple action. Come on, a ”Japanese” in all the rules.
The shame is that Showa American Story won’t be coming to PS5 and PC this year (it was also announced for PS4 years ago, but hasn’t been mentioned again), because has been postponed to 2026.
”As we move into the final stages of development, after careful consideration, we have decided to adjust our release plans to ensure the best possible quality. Showa American Story release window moved from 2025 to 2026”, confirms the game’s official account on Twitter/X.
At least now we know that development is already in the final phaseso we can assume it will be released in 2026, barring one big surprise.
Showa American Story postpones its madness until 2026

The executive producer of Nekcom Games, Xy Luoconfirms on social media that Showa American Story postponed from 2025 to 2026although without revealing the exact date of its release. Let’s remember that it was originally announced in 2022.
This surreal adventure is still in development for PS5 and PC, and the good news is that it’s already in its final stages, so we could see this (with a little luck) in the first half of 2026.
”I know this isn’t the news you were hoping for, and I’m so sorry to keep you waiting any longer. This additional time will allow us to deliver Showa American Story to the level of quality it deserves and ensure it meets the standards we have set for ourselves. The entire Nekcom team is doing their best to ensure that Showa American Story is released in its strongest form.” says Xy Luo.
The team needs more time for the game to reach the best possible state, so it opts for the most logical decision, given that we haven’t seen new images in almost a year.
Of course, Showa American Story must do everything possible to not coincide with GTA VI in the fall (November, specifically) of next year. Both are open world adventuresalthough the Nekcom game be radically thematically opposite to the Rockstar title.
Japanese culture enthusiasts are eager to get their hands on it, as it offers a rather peculiar vision of the United States converted into a colony of Japan in the early 90s, with zombies, giants and other miscellaneous madness.
Showa American Story is one of the most striking open world games, whose launch on PS5 and PC via Steam will take place in 2026still no date. Check out last night’s State of Play Japan for other Japanese and Asian titles coming to PS5.
