Many gamers still enjoy the PS4 12 years after its release, so Sony plans to extend the PS5’s life cycle beyond what was expected.
The new generation of consoles is still a long way off, at least if we talk Playstation. Many expected the PS6 and new handheld to arrive between 2027 and 2028, but now there is a possibility that it will be extended until the beginning of the next decade, unlike the Xbox.
While the Xbox Magnus could even be announced in 2026, PS6 will be waiting due to the great success the PS5 is having all over the world. Proof of this is that it has already sold 84.2 million consoles and fell into the top 10 in history.
With the PS5 being one of the best-selling consoles in history, it would be absurd to dismiss it prematurely. And this also includes the PS4 factor, a console whose life cycle already corresponds to that of the PS2.
Sony CFO Lin Tao dropped the bombshell on the earnings call for the second quarter of fiscal 2025, which ended September 30, 2025.
Tao guarantees that PS5 is currently in the middle of its life cycle5 years after its release, which means it could very well have another 5 years left. If so, PS6 wouldn’t hit stores until 2029 or even 2030.
The reason? Sony believes that There are many users who still play on PS4so they can’t ”bury” the console even after 12 years since its launch.
PS5 could last until the end of the decade

Lin Tao, Sony’s chief financial officer, highlights the importance that the PlayStation 4 still holds for PlayStation’s active user base as a platform, including the number of PS Plus subscribers.
guarantees that PS4 is having a longer life cycle than standard (as also happened with the Nintendo Switch), which implies that there is no need to leave it behind.
”Our opinion is that, compared to the life cycles of conventional consoles, the PS4’s seems to be getting longer and longer. Especially in the case of the PS4, which was launched in 2013 and more than a decade has passed, but there are still many active users who like the console…”.
Indirectly, this makes PS5 is still in the middle of its life cycleso we can rule out that the PS6 will arrive in 2027 or even 2028, as predicted by former manager Shuhei Yoshida.
”From that perspective, we think the PS5 is only halfway there and we have plans to expand it further”.
Sony engineers continue to work with AMD on Project Amethyst, a true technological leap that will begin to be noticed from 2026, when it arrives the new version of PSSR for PS5 Pro. This will also serve to extend the lifespan of the PS5 as a platform.
What will Xbox do about this? Another reason to stick with the current generation of hardware is that GTA VI has been delayed until November 19, 2026, so PS5 and Xbox Series X|S still have a lot to offer. Or at least the Sony console.
