Campinas native Daniel Lucas de Campos, 32, died in action in Ukraine on Monday (24/11). This information was confirmed by his wife, Leticia Prado, who is now facing the agony of waiting for the body to be returned to Brazil. Daniel leaves behind two young children and a family routine built on eight years of relationship.
Daniel, a volunteer for the Ukrainian forces, left Campinas on August 12 intending to join the front. According to his family, he had a dream of serving.

However, the desire also had financial weight, as the Brazilian signed a contract stipulating a monthly payment equivalent to R$25,000, an amount he did not receive in full.
A promise that never came
According to the family, in the first two months Daniel received only R$7,000. In the past two months, he has not received anything. The wife says that the money is necessary for the house, as she does not work.
His death came two days after another Brazilian, Lucas Lima, from Minas Gerais, was confirmed to have died during fighting as well.
Since Monday, Daniel’s body has remained in Kiev, awaiting forensic procedures.
According to the protocol, the Brazilian government only pays the cost of shipping to Brasilia. From there to Campinas, the family members had to open a fundraising campaign and collected 11,000 Brazilian reals.
The road to war
Before setting off, Daniel spent three days training in Rio de Janeiro.
He worked for years as a car salesman and always talked about his dream of joining the armed forces.
The family tried to dissuade him, but ended up giving in to his enthusiasm and his promise of financial stability.
On Sunday (23), Letizia posted a text on social media asking for help and reporting the difficulty of bringing the body. “I want to bring home the father of my children,” he wrote.

A struggle with no end in sight
Daniel died as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine approached three years. Last Saturday (22), Kiev announced a period of consultations with the allies regarding a possible peace agreement.
This step came after pressure from the United States on President Volodymyr Zelensky to analyze a proposal stipulating the cession of the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, and the Crimean Peninsula.
