Nurse Maiara Corassi, 36, and her husband, engineer Eric Corassi, 42, were arrested on charges of abusing their adopted children. The couple went viral on social media when they said they only spent 6 hours in the adoption queue.
The arrest was made last Wednesday (12/11), in Jundiaí, inside São Paulo, after the children’s school informed the guardianship counselor that one of the boys, aged 10, had been injured and was refusing to attend classes.

According to the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), Eric and Maiara were transferred to the 1st Police District of the municipality, where the law was formalized. The Ministry stated that they remained at the court’s disposal.

The Supreme State Security Prosecution reported that the children were sent for medical care and then to institutional care.
At the hospital, the victim confirmed the assaults, adding that Mayara also pulled out her hair, put pressure on her genitals and actually broke a bottle on her arm. The boy reported that he had already spent 15 days without bathing, and was forbidden from eating as a form of punishment. The doctor conducted a clinical examination of the victim, and found multiple fractures and changes in the abdomen.
Also according to the police report, during the interview at the police station, the Guardian Council employee stated that “the parents remained silent when asked about the facts, and did not show any remorse or emotion, and the mother’s only concern related to the possibility of visits and the routine after the children were removed.”

From adoption in 6 hours to arrest for abuse
On the same day that a court official visited Mayara and informed her she was ready and officially on the adoption waiting list, she received a call saying her children had been “selected.” She and her husband officially adopted their three children on November 28, 2024.
Looking at the moment from the opening of the operation until the day Maiara and Erik met the children, one year had passed. On February 5, 2023, they took a course for a few months and participated in interviews with the technical team of the forum.

At approximately 11 a.m. on January 25, 2024, the couple received a visit from a court official, who brought a summons saying they were eligible to adopt and were officially on the waiting list for the national system. In the afternoon of the same day, they received a call saying that the children had already been found.
The nurse said: “When (the warden) called me, she said, ‘Yes, Mayara, you were right. I was just waiting for your name to enter the system to call. I already know your children.’”
