Evangelical and right-wing pastor, federal MP Otoni de Paula (MDB-RJ) on Wednesday morning (26) participated in the approval of the project that extends income tax relief to those who earn up to R$ 5,000, and stated that the agenda is a victory “for the Brazilian people and not for an ideological camp.”
Ottone was previously vice president of Jair Bolsonaro’s government in the Council, and in October 2024, he appeared in a photo praying with President Lula. In April, he indicated that he would be the coordinator of former Ronaldo Caiado’s (Brazilian Football Confederation) presidential campaign among evangelicals.
In recent weeks, the MP has been campaigning to support the candidacy of the Attorney General of the Federation, Jorge Messias, for the vacant position of Luis Roberto Barroso on the Federal Supreme Court. He criticizes Senate President Davy Alcolombre (Uniao Brasil-AP) for “attempting to hijack the powers of the President of the Republic to nominate the name for the formation of the Supreme Court.” Alcombre was dissatisfied with Lula for passing over the name of his preferred candidate, Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
But the parliamentarian also complains about the government mainly because of the pressures surrounding project reports sent by the executive.
Ottone states that there is an attempt “to exceed the powers of President (Hugo) Motta to appoint the rapporteur he wants for the bills that are processed in the chamber, even if it is initiated by the government.” He concludes, “All of this undermines the democratic understanding between the powers, and the only loser is the nation.”
