A large fish was found dead last Wednesday (11/12) with its beak stuck in a car tire. The scene was recorded on the beach at Balneário Piçarras, in Santa Catarina.
Photographer and biologist Mauricio Guartilla found the fish and contacted the Univali Oceanographic Museum, which went to the site and removed the carcass. The animal was a blue marlin, and the carcass was 3.3 meters long and weighed 400 kilograms. Check the pictures:
On social media, Guartilla shared video and photos of the scene and gave an emotional report. “It is heartbreaking to see the impact we, humans, have on nature,” he wrote. “Our waste takes lives that cannot be blamed even on our lack of care.”
The biologist explained that the animal’s carcass will be displayed in the Univali Museum, in a pavilion on the impact of pollution on the oceans. He said: “I hope that this sad scene serves as a warning and a tool for environmental education. Nature is asking for help, and the responsibility lies with all of us. Let us raise awareness and take better care of our planet.” Watch the video:
The Univali Museum of Oceanography issued a report confirming that the fish’s death occurred as a result of its beak piercing the tire.
The blue marlin is the largest billfish in the world and migrates along the entire Brazilian coast. The length of the animal can reach 4.5 meters, and its weight can reach 900 kilograms. One of its main characteristics is the great speed it can reach in the sea, which may explain how the animal was able to puncture a rubber tire with its beak.
However, it is classified as “vulnerable” on the list of endangered animals. This is mainly because they are a desirable target for sport hunters, who seek the challenge of catching a very fast animal.
