United States Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed on Friday (11/14) that she will open a federal investigation into billionaire Jeffrey Epstein’s contacts with Democratic Party figures and major financial institutions, on orders from President Donald Trump. With the decision, the case will be handled by Jay Clayton, Chief of the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
“Thank you, Mr. President,” Bondi wrote in a post on the X website, attaching a “copy” of Trump’s order. He added: “Jay Clayton is one of the most competent and trusted prosecutors in the country, and I have charged him with leading this case. As in all matters, the Department will conduct this process expeditiously and fairly to provide answers to the American people.”

Bondi’s decision reflects the White House’s strongest move yet to respond to mounting pressure from Democrats and some Republicans for full disclosure of Justice Department files related to Epstein.

Pressure on Congress and Trump’s attack
Democratic and Republican members of Congress filed a petition to put the issue to a vote in the chamber. Trump tried to obstruct the initiative’s progress, including calling a meeting in the Situation Room with the Republican congressman who signed the petition before it reached the critical number of 218 supports. But to no avail, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that he would submit the proposal to plenary session next week.

Epstein wrote that Trump knew about the sexual assault but did not participate
Frustrated, Trump posted several messages on Truth Social criticizing Republican members of Congress in favor of releasing the files, calling them “weak and foolish” and labeling the movement “another hoax.”
In another post, the US President said that Democrats are “resurrecting the Epstein hoax” to distract attention from the political impasse in Washington, and stated that party figures “spent most of their lives with Epstein and on his island.”
Accusations
On Friday, Trump asked Bondi, the Justice Department and the FBI to investigate Epstein’s ties to Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reed Hoffman, JPMorgan Chase and other big names.
Among those cited, JPMorgan Chase responded through its spokeswoman, Patricia Wexler. She said the bank ended its relationship with Epstein “years before he was arrested on sex trafficking charges.”
In 2023, JPMorgan spent US$290 million to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by survivors who claimed the institution ignored suspicious financial movements that would have facilitated the financier’s crimes.
