A vote is scheduled for Wednesday, in a single debate in the Rio Legislative Assembly (Alerj), on the supplementary bill allowing the sale of the Maracana and 61 other properties owned by the Rio de Janeiro government. The sports complex in Brazil’s most famous stadium, which witnessed historic matches and World Cup finals (1950 and 2014), was included on October 22 in the list of public assets that could be sold, on the initiative of deputies of the Constitution and Justice Commission who amended the original list sent by the state executive. In this afternoon’s session, if the proposal receives amendments from parliamentarians, it will be removed from the agenda for a new vote.
- Gil, Alok and Joao Gomez: New Year’s Eve in Copacabana will see twice as many fireworks displays as recent celebrations
- Christmas Tree at Botafogo Cove: The exhibition is expected to receive 650,000 visitors, according to organizers’ estimates
In addition to the Maracana Sports Complex, Aldea Maracana, an indigenous urban area adjacent to the stadium, makes up the list of properties that could change hands. Together, the market value of these areas amounts to about R$2 billion, according to estimates by CCJ deputies. They claim that the sale of these and other assets is necessary to relieve pressure on state coffers, which expects a deficit of about R$19 billion for next year, and that, in terms of servicing the public debt alone, will have to pay R$12.33 billion, according to the draft annual budget law for 2026 (PLOA).

Today, under contract, Flamengo and Fluminense have the concession of the Maracanazinho stadium and gymnasium until 2044. The Julio Delamar Water Park and the former Celio de Barros Athletics Stadium, also part of the sports complex, remain under state management.
– Currently, the state government is paying huge sums of money to maintain the Maracanã complex, without obtaining a long-term concession. The executive spends, on average, R$1 million on each match held at the stadium – says the President of the Caribbean Court of Justice, MP Rodrigo Amorim (UN). — She requested the inclusion (in the list) of Jörg’s properties, which include more than 300 of her properties. In the list of these assets, there is, for example, Nababsia real estate where Org company managers live on the seashore – he says.
The Tijuca battalion enters and Cayo Martins leaves
Parliamentarians’ alternative to the executive’s original draft excluded 16 sites from an initial list of 48 properties up for sale, and added a further 30 sites to reach 62 properties to be assessed in Wednesday’s vote. Important areas were included in the list, such as the 6th Military Police Battalion, in Tijuca, in the northern region of Rio. Other areas were removed, such as the Cayo Martins Sports Complex in Niteroi, the Military Police Battalion area in Leblon, in the southern region, and the Villa Lobos Music School, in the center of the capital.
- “Good night, Cinderella”: A Canadian tourist fell victim to a scam in the South Rio area and lost R$16,000
This afternoon’s discussion could lead to the text of the bill being amended again, with more sites being included or excluded.
