The external employee of CEB IPes (Companhia Energética de Brasília Iluminação Pública e Serviços) died on Friday (28), after being exposed to an explosion at the underground power substation of the Ministry of Racial Equality (MIR), in Brasília, last Tuesday (25).

Raimundo Nonato was maintaining the lighting on the facade of the ministry building when he was struck by the explosion. He was burned 60% of his body, according to the fire department, and was taken to HRAN (Asa Norte Regional Hospital).

When contacted, the CEB said it regretted Nonato’s death and stated that it was adopting strict security standards and following up on investigations by the authorities.

Diamante Engenharia, the company where Raimundo worked, also mourned his death. In a memo sent to G1, the company said it was working with authorities to clarify what happened and “reaffirms its commitment to safety and respect for the lives of professionals.”

The explosion of the substation in the MIR basement caused a cloud of smoke that led to the evacuation of the building. 20 people were treated at the scene and 6 other people were taken to hospital due to symptoms of poisoning.
