Madrid, November 16 (European Press) –
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) condemned the shooting by Israeli soldiers on Sunday of members of the international mission from a Merkava tank located inside Lebanese territory occupied by Israeli forces.
UNIFIL explained in a statement published on its account
The Blue Helmets asked the Israeli armed forces to cease fire through communication channels. The peacekeeping mission stated that “they were able to leave the area safely after 30 minutes, when a Merkava tank withdrew towards the position of the Israeli armed forces” on Lebanese territory.
UNIFIL stressed that “fortunately there were no casualties,” denouncing in any case that this incident “represents a serious violation of Security Council Resolution 1701.”
He called “once again on the Israeli armed forces to stop any aggressive behavior and attacks on or near peacekeepers working to support the return to stability that Israel and Lebanon say they want.”
On Friday, UNIFIL itself denounced the establishment of a T-shaped wall by Israeli forces that prevents Lebanese residents from reaching an area of about 4,000 square meters near Yaroun, inside Lebanese territory, and urged the Israeli authorities to withdraw from all its positions north of the Blue Ceasefire Line.
Israel launched dozens of bombings against Lebanon despite the agreed-upon ceasefire, arguing that it was acting against Hezbollah’s activities and thus ensuring that it did not violate the ceasefire agreement, despite Beirut and the group’s criticism of these actions, which were also condemned by the United Nations.
The ceasefire agreement, reached after months of fighting following the October 7, 2023 attacks, stipulated that both Israel and Hezbollah must withdraw their forces from southern Lebanon. However, the Israeli army maintains five sites in the territory of its neighboring country, something that was also criticized by the Lebanese authorities and the Shiite group, which demands an end to this deployment.
