The incident reportedly started after police denied entry to fans who attempted to invade the stadium. In total, 48,000 tickets were available for the match, however, a crowd would have gathered at the gates on 11 November.
The authorities had also banned the entry of fans who wore flip-flops, hats and other items considered prohibited, which sparked anger among those in attendance. Despite what happened, no one was arrested.
According to the Portuguese newspaper A Bola, 23 people suffered fractures due to trampling and falling. 47 others were treated because they felt unwell due to overcrowding.
On the field, Argentina won 2-0 with goals from Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez.
