Three earthquakes were detected, in less than 30 minutes, in the Jacobina area, northern Bahia, last Tuesday afternoon (11/11). Although they were close together and recorded in a short period of time, the tremors were small and went unnoticed by residents, according to information from the Brazilian Seismological Network (RSBR).
The first event was captured at 2:43 PM (Brasilia time), with a magnitude of 1.3. Minutes later, at 2:53 p.m., sensors recorded a 2.2 magnitude earthquake, the strongest in the sequence. The last tremor occurred at 3:11 pm and had a magnitude of 1.7.
The records were made by RSBR stations and subsequently analyzed by the Seismic Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). The network is coordinated by the National Observatory, linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, with support from the Geological Service of Brazil.
Before these events, the last tremor in the area was identified on November 10, also in Jacobina, with a magnitude of 1.7. According to experts, earthquakes of this intensity are common in the country, especially in the northeast of the country, where geological pressures in the Earth’s crust encourage the occurrence of natural earthquakes.

The sequence of tremors comes at a time when other regions in Brazil are facing severe weather phenomena.
November is expected to record new extratropical cyclones, caused by cold fronts and weather changes. Projections indicate greater risks for states in the south and southeast, such as Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo and Espirito Santo. The state of Minas Gerais also continues to be monitored.
These systems can bring heavy rain, strong winds and sharp drops in temperatures. Meanwhile, the North and Midwest are expected to maintain the hot and humid pattern typical of the season.
It is expected that temperatures will continue to drop until the twentieth of this month, and the temperature will gradually return after that.
