Former President Jair Bolsonaro asked Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to allow Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro to visit the country. In the request submitted by his lawyers, Bolsonaro stated that the meeting should take place “as soon as possible,” at a date to be determined, to allow direct dialogue between the two.
“The purpose of the request is to allow a specific personal meeting to be held at a specific date, preferably as soon as possible, due to the need for a direct dialogue with the petitioner,” Bolsonaro’s defenders say.
Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since August, and all his visits must take place with the approval of Moraes, who is also responsible for setting the date of the visit.
Claudio Castro belongs to the same party as Bolsonaro, the Liberal Party, and revolves around the former president’s family clan, despite not being part of the hard core.
At the end of October, the governor was responsible for launching a massive police operation against the Vermelho commandos in the communities of the northern region of Rio de Janeiro, resulting in the deaths of 121 people. According to Rio’s Public Ministry, the targets were leaders who were expanding the faction’s territory and harboring criminals from other countries.
