For the first time, Argentina will not, in isolation, be the country with the most Libertadores titles. Palmeiras and Flamengo will compete on Saturday 29th in the final, starting at 6pm in Lima.

In the ranking of the competition’s greatest champions, the historical hegemon is Argentina. The clubs that have lifted the trophy the most over the years are Independiente with seven, followed by Boca Juniors with six, and River Plate with four. On the Brazilian side, whoever wins between Palmeiras and Flamengo will make history by becoming the country’s first four-time Copa Libertadores champion and the eighth team to reach this milestone.

Peñarol, the Uruguayan, is considered the only “conqueror” among the biggest champions outside the Argentine-Brazil axis, with five titles. In total, 28 clubs from seven different nationalities have won the cup in the 66th edition of the Libertadores. Countries such as Paraguay, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador have already celebrated at least one title. Bolivia, Peru and Venezuela never won the competition.

Argentina’s superiority in the number of titles goes back to the first editions of the tournament. Led by Independiente and Estudiantes, Argentina won nine titles in just 11 years, between 1964 and 1974.

The Brazilian championship, in turn, gained strength in Lima precisely, six years ago, when Flamengo broke a 38-year drought and won the Copa Libertadores again in 2019. Since then, the cup has not left Brazil: there was a new red and black title in 2022, two titles for Palmeiras (2020 and 2021) and wins for Fluminense and Botafogo in the last two seasons.
