The Central Bank’s Economic Activity Index (IBC-Br) fell by 0.24% in September, compared to the previous month, the Central Bank (BC) announced on Monday. In August, the index rose by 0.39% (data revised to increase by 0.4%).
Average estimates collected by Value date Era of stability. The data was also within expectations of a 0.5% decrease to a 0.3% increase.
In the quarter ending September, there was a 0.89% decline compared to the previous three months. Compared to September 2024, there was an increase of 1.98%.
In the 12 months ending in September, the index showed a 3% increase. Due to constant revisions, the index accumulated over 12 months is more stable than the monthly measurement. In the year, the variance was also 2.55%.
Finally, in the quarterly moving average, used to capture trends, the IBC-Br was down 0.11% compared to the three months ending in August.
The IBC-Br follows a calculation methodology that differs from the national accounts calculated by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The BC index, with a monthly frequency, allows more frequent monitoring of the development of economic activity, while the GDP, with a quarterly frequency, describes a more comprehensive picture of the economy.
The Central Bank also published the sector openings for the index. The IBC-Br Agropecuária index rose 1.51% in September compared to August. The registered pointer is located in other slots. IBC-Br Industry decreased by 0.66%, IBC-Br Services decreased by 0.09%, IBC-Br Taxes decreased by 0.65%, and IBC-Br Ex-Agropecuária decreased by 0.37%.
According to BC, due to methodological differences, differences between IBC-Br and IBGE national accounts are expected to be larger in sectoral openings than in aggregates.
