Saving the wild animals required shutting down the grid, leaving part of the city without power
A howler monkey ended up causing a power outage in Santa Maria on Friday afternoon (14). The animal entered the Santa Maria 3 substation in the industrial area, triggering an emergency shutdown of the network to allow the rescue team to work safely. The action knocked out power to several neighborhoods in the sweltering mid-afternoon.
CPFL Transmissão reported that the problem was caused by the presence of a wild animal in the structure. It was later confirmed that it was a howler monkey. The Military Fire Department was called after at least one short circuit occurred inside the nearby Vimsa (Coca-Cola) substation.
To avoid risks during the rescue operation, the network supplying the city had to be temporarily stopped. Firefighters removed the animal alive and transported it to Criadouro São Bras, also in Santa Maria, for evaluation and care.
“The download was restored at 4:34 p.m.,” CPFL said in a statement.
