“The problem is the constant release of cortisol, the stress hormone, into the bloodstream. A person who experiences frequent stress is more at risk of being affected by these physical symptoms, which can include aging of the skin as well as a sudden change in hair color, causing more strands to turn grey,” explains Liliane Brasileiro, a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.
The phenomenon that causes hair bleaching is called bleaching and has two causes:
- Stopping the production of melanin (the pigment that gives hair its color) by the cells responsible for its production (melanocytes);
- Failure to transport the pigment produced to the hair shaft, which occurs due to cell damage due to oxidative stress.
