56.1 thousand people registered for COP30, a decrease of more than 10 thousand participants compared to COP29, when 66.7 thousand people registered for the opening of the conference in Baku.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations climate agreement, released the statements on Monday night (10), the first day of the summit in Belém.
The number of participants is provisional and is expected to change by the end of the conference, with the total only indicating people who have registered for the event. With eventual withdrawals, the amount may decrease.
For example, COP29 confirmed the in-person participation of 54,100 people, 12,600 fewer than the number presented at the beginning of the summit in Azerbaijan.
This year, delegations from 194 Parties, the name given to countries participating in the Conference of the Parties, registered for the conference. The number of country representatives is 11.5 thousand people, in addition to 11.9 thousand others in the “surplus” category, which refers to the excess number of participants. At COP29, these numbers were 17.6 thousand and 15.4 thousand, respectively.
Thus, COP30 in Belém had 9,649 fewer registrations in the country category.
UN agencies have officially registered 366 people to participate in the conference, while the total number of the team at COP29 is 677 people. In the “surplus” category, this year there were 340, compared to 451 the previous year.
According to the UNFCCC, 5,141 people chose to attend the conference remotely only. At the 2024 summit, the total number reached 3,975 online participants.
