Articles on nepotism and open voting generate a crisis in the council and postpone the vote
Corinth is going through a real political war over reforming its statute. The president of the deliberative council, Romeo Toma Junior, is under intense pressure from his peers. In fact, the crisis reached its peak on October 29, in a heated meeting of the Kuri (Guidance Council). According to the minutes of the meeting, after Councilor Felipe Isabella described the project as “useless,” a wide-ranging discussion began. Thomas then clashed with those present and “left the meeting.”
The center of disagreement is the content of the text and the form of voting. Many advisors are uncomfortable with what they consider a “fast” process, and request more time for analysis. However, the most explosive points are the other points. First, Thomas insists on public, not secret, voting, which may embarrass members when voting on sensitive issues. Furthermore, there are two things that are sparking anger: the proposal to grant voting rights to fan members and, essentially, the proposal to ban the employment of relatives of advisors at Corinthians, which is currently common in Parque São Jorge.
The pressure on Touma is enormous. Since the text was revealed, on October 27, the Council President has received daily complaints. Because of this, he had to give up already. The vote in the Council, for example, which was scheduled to take place on November 17, was postponed until November 24, to allow more time for analysis. Furthermore, Touma decided to hold an informal meeting with all political groups on November 13, in an attempt to ease tensions and explain the project.
Despite giving up on time, Touma does not give up on the content and has a strategy to overcome internal resistance. The Council President has already decided that the most controversial items, such as the anti-nepotism veto and members’ fan votes, will not die in the deliberative Council. Therefore, it will also be put to a vote at the General Assembly of Members scheduled to be held on 20 December. Thomas thus effectively left the final decision to the Corinthians partner, overcoming pressure from advisors.
