The match started with a chance for each team, and Fluminense arrived with a short free kick, the ball bounced off Everaldo, but remained in Cassio’s hands. Cruzeiro had the opportunity from Christian, who shot it to Arroyo, but the ball was cut off by the defence. After that, the Tricolor had another chance, as Acosta received it in the middle and shot a wonderful shot, but Cassio blocked it and sent the ball into the corner.
In the 18th minute, Cruzeiro arrived with great danger. In a quick exit, Matthews passed to Romero, who found Caio Jorge. The striker stepped forward and sent it to Arroyo. The striker kicked it and the ball approached the goal, which frightened the Fluminense fans. Cruzeiro got dangerous again, now in the 29th minute, another quick exit, this time, Matheus Pereira found Arroyo on the run, and the striker crossed to Caio Jorge, but the ball went past the centre-forward and went to the wing.
Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio has twice shown why he has been named among the best in the world by FIFA, the first time with a header from Kike, the goalkeeper making two brilliant saves on the goal line. In the second opportunity, Matthews Pereira shot a low ball into the penalty area, but the goalkeeper cleared it in two halves. Once again, Fabio took a beautiful shot from Eduardo, and the goalkeeper went high and looked for the ball, sending it into the corner. On the beam! Fluminense counterattacked in stoppage time, and Hercules shot a powerful shot, but the ball hit the crossbar.
The first half ended with a controversial move. Fluminense called for the expulsion of Matheus Pereira, who hit Bernal in the face, and called the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), but the referee understood that the move was not for the red, as Matheus had been obstructed earlier in the game.
The first dangerous move of the second half came from Eduardo. The midfielder kicked hard, and Fabio went to catch it, but the ball slipped and went out. Cruzeiro arrived dangerously, Caio Jorge received the ball in the middle and escaped, and the striker rushed to the edge of the area and risked a shot, but the ball went out. Fluminense returned it directly, and Everaldo received it in the middle, rushed and shot a cross, but the ball went out.
Zubeldia changed the attack, replacing Serna with Sotildo, then with Cruzeiro, Jardim called on Gabigol, and Arroyo was chosen to leave. The changes had no effect on either side, so Zubeldia decided to change again, and Kino and John Kennedy were called in to replace Everaldo and Canobio. Fluminense began to move out quickly, but without much concern for Cassio. Cruzeiro had more possession, but also failed to create a threat on Fabio’s goal.
