Del Mar Hospital treats a patient with epilepsy using pioneering laser neurosurgery

Barcelona, November 27 (EFE).- The Hospital del Mar performed a callosotomy on a patient with epilepsy, a surgical procedure that consists of partially or completely cutting the corpus callosum (a group of nerve fibers that connect the cerebral hemispheres) using pioneering laser technology.

The hospital explained in a statement that this intervention, the first of its kind in Spain, works to reduce the severity and frequency of epileptic seizures.

This type of intervention is a “minimally invasive” technique, eliminating the need to “use more traditional invasive techniques”, such as making a large cut in the skin so that the surgeon can have direct access to the brain.

This technology consists of the use of laser sensors that will be used, with the help of an automated system and with continuous monitoring of MRI images, to perform the intervention and obtain the expected result.

The head of the Epilepsy Program at Hospital del Mar, Rodrigo Rocamora, explained that this surgical technique is intended for “those patients who suffer from frequent falls and who put their safety at risk.”

The Epilepsy Program is a pioneering unit in the development of epilepsy surgery in Spain, introducing techniques such as robotic surgery or the use of lasers.

This type of surgery seeks to improve the quality of life in patients who suffer from recurrent falls as a result of epileptic seizures, which are a sudden and transient change in the normal electrical activity of a group of nerve cells in the brain.

Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Carlo Marras, explained that by using this technique they achieve “a more localized and safer injury to the patient,” who can be discharged from the hospital within two days. Evie
