Deputy Governor of the Federal District, Celina Liao (PP), said that the Pabuda prison complex is unable to receive former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison for the attempted coup. Amid the impasse over where he will serve his sentence, Selina highlighted that Bolsonaro’s health condition and advanced age prevent the former president from remaining in prison.
- Conflict over the Senate: Jorginho Melo avoids taking a position, but praises the MP who criticized Carlos’ candidacy
- From the use of aircraft to secret detention: PF already has a plan to arrest Bolsonaro and is preparing for “all scenarios”
He needs a special diet, as he is old and a former president. If well cared for, it will have a long life. We are unable to prepare the special food he needs due to surgeries. Even in the most isolated areas, conditions are not suitable for a former president – the deputy governor said in an interview with SBT News.
Governor Ibanes Rocha (MDB) stressed that Babuda has the “material conditions” to receive Bolsonaro, and the one who will decide the situation is the Supreme Federal Court (STF). When asked about the matter, unlike Selena, he claimed that he had no knowledge of the former president’s health condition.
-The Supreme Court will decide. Seape (Secretary of the Department of Corrections) merely complies. I know the prison conditions, and we have financial conditions. I do not now know the health of the former president. I don’t know how he is, and I don’t visit him, because we are not friends. I don’t know if he would be able to live in prison and with the food available there – the governor told the Metropolis website.
Ibañes declared his support for Bolsonaro in the second round of the 2022 presidential elections, and former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL) has already stated that she supports Selena to succeed the DF government in 2026. The current director, in turn, has expressed his desire to do a “double-up” with PL leader Mulher for a ticket to the Federal Senate next year.
As GLOBO columnist Malu Gaspar reports, Bolsonaro must serve the beginning of his sentence in the 19th Military Police Battalion of the Federal District, known as “Babudinha,” which earned the nickname for its presence within the Babuda prison complex. The decision is up to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF).
Babodina is a reserved area that mainly receives imprisoned military police officers and has already received other authorities, such as former Minister Anderson Torres, former Defense Forces Vice Governor Benedito Domingos and former Health Minister Francisco Araujo. For example, members of the former leadership of the People’s Defense Forces, who were suspected of inaction during the January 8 coup, were transferred there. The officers were released and are awaiting trial at the STF.
