Prime Video’s Tremembé series recalled several real-life moments involving notorious Brazilian criminals. The production, which narrated events inside the place known as the “Celebrity Prison,” revealed that Elise Matsunaga received money related to her marriage to Marcus Matsunaga, even after she was convicted of his death.
However, the money is not an inheritance, as Elise has been disinherited, as explained in the book Elise Matsunaga: The Woman Who Cut Off Her Husband, by Ulysses Campbell (editor of The Matrix), which inspired the series.
Marcus and Elise were married under joint ownership. She therefore had the right to keep half of the assets acquired during the marriage. However, even after being disinherited, the criminal received a sum.

She was entitled to R$900,000, a sum that came from a million-dollar wine cellar the two acquired during their marriage, but it would not be an inheritance, as Ulysses explains in the book.

Tremembé: How Elise Matsunaga’s daughter discovered that her mother had dismembered her father
Elise was able to get the amount because it was part of the stock price, not an inheritance, and was validated through the partial asset sharing system the two had adopted in their marriage. Therefore, she is entitled to the assets acquired during the marriage, even if they were purchased or managed by Marcos while they were cohabiting.
Marcos’ inheritance went to the former couple’s daughter, who was raised by her paternal grandparents. This value is one reason why there is a court battle to remove Elise’s name from her daughter’s birth certificate.
Marcus’s parents believe that Elise killed him because of financial interests and now fear that the child will become a target of the criminal. “If you kill him for money, the child, who has inherited everything, also becomes a target,” Ulysses Campbell said in an interview with UOL’s Universa, in 2021.
