The head of the Pachuca Group confirmed on Wednesday that Colombian star James Rodriguez will not renew his contract with Mexican club Leon, and will search for a new club seven months before the start of the 2026 World Cup.

“James has terminated his contract. We are grateful to have him here,” said Jesús Martinez Patiño, president of Lyon’s ownership group.

The director praised the player who “is to Colombia like Messi to Argentina or Cristiano Ronaldo to Portugal.” James played for León in the Mexican League and the League Cup. In total, the Colombian midfielder made 34 appearances for the club, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. James, a former player for Sao Paulo, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and others, signed with the Mexican team last January motivated by the possibility of playing in the first edition of the Club World Cup.
