A woman from Wyoming, in the United States, named Susan Denker, survived a heart attack thanks to the actions of a dog, a poodle named Lily. The incident occurred in Cheyenne, when she was home alone and a friend found her unconscious, warning of the animal’s unusual behavior.

Denker’s friend, Karen, realized something was wrong when she rang the house’s doorbell several times. About to leave, Lily’s incessant barking guided her to the bedroom, where she found her owner passed out. “If it wasn’t for Karen’s Lily warning, and if Karen wasn’t wise enough to listen to a dog, I wouldn’t be talking to you right now,” Susan told the Cowboy State Daily. This incident happened in July.
The authorities were called, broke down the door, and took Susan to the hospital. After recovering, the woman was reunited with Lily, in a moment she described as touching: “She licked every inch of my face… I hugged her with all my might, and she hugged me tight, too.” Since then, the two have been inseparable, and Lily accompanies her owner to her medical appointments and daily routine.
Lily is not just an ordinary pet. The poodle has been trained to recognize signs of high blood pressure, using its nose to feel the pulse in Dunker’s neck. During consultations, the dog alerts the owner when she notices discomfort.
Caring for dogs trained to help humans is not an isolated case. Recently, in Colombia, a military dog named Sanson lost one of his hind legs after an artifact left behind by the ELN exploded. Despite his serious injury, he managed to return to the soldier in charge, saving 36 soldiers and hundreds of residents of the La Raya area, in Yondo, Antioquia.
The Colombian National Army highlighted on social media that Sanson will no longer be able to serve, but his legacy lives on: “#FourPawedHero lost one of his paws, but he saved lives in a heroic way.”
