Ironically, members of Lula’s government claim that federal MP Guilherme Dirret (PP-SP), rapporteur of the landmark project against organized crime, did a better job than Jacques Bauer.
The reference here is to the hero of the TV series “24 Hours”, which was very popular in the first decade of this century, in which Bauer had this deadline to avoid terrorist attacks.
Dirit, who took leave as São Paulo’s Minister of Public Security, issued his report within hours after his appointment to the position by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Mota (Republicanos-PB), last Friday (7). The government considers this decision a bullet in the foot.
The text was immediately criticized by many parties, in particular because it deprived the Federal Police of its independence in investigating organized crime, forcing the company to seek authorization from the State Police.
Furthermore, the federal government attacked the fact that Dirit had equated penalties for acts committed by factions with those committed by terrorists.
Finally, the report was also criticized by prosecutors, who saw restrictions on his actions. This topic was addressed by many participants at the 26th National Public Prosecution Congress, which was held in Brasilia.
The barrage of criticism led Derrett to back down on controversial points in an attempt to get the project approved. However, the vote, which was scheduled to take place on Wednesday (12), was postponed until next week.
