What is COP and what is it for?
COP is an abbreviation for Conference of the Parties (COP), the annual meeting of signatory states to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was established during the Rio 92 conference in 1992, and the COP is the main event for setting environmental decisions and climate targets. No decision can be taken unless it is unanimous among the parties and becomes effective for all signatory states.

This historic record was recorded by Heads of State and Government in Belém, Pará
In 1995, the first COP was held in Berlin, Germany, and the conference has been held every year since then, except for 2020, when the event was canceled due to health restrictions imposed by Covid-19.
All 198 signatory countries of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change are participating in the conference. Heads of state, ministers and diplomats usually attend the annual meeting representing their countries. Moreover, it is common for them to be organized into groups and alliances, based on regional groups or specific agendas. There is, for example, the Group of 77, an alliance of developing countries. In addition to countries, this event brings together scholars, business leaders, NGOs and activists from around the world.
COP negotiations align global interests around concrete goals, such as targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, financing mechanisms for climate projects, the transition to a low-carbon economy and other global agreements.

The COP Presidency prioritizes topics, sets objectives and shapes discussions. This year, the project will be implemented by diplomat Andre Correa do Lago, with executive direction by Anna Toni, National Secretary for Climate Change. They report directly to the Office of the Presidency.
The event lasts for two weeks. The first is intended for more technical discussions and the second for political meetings and signing of agreements. On Thursday (6) and Friday (7) the Leaders’ Summit will be held, which this time will be held before the start of the COP, with the presence of dozens of heads of state and paving the way for what will be discussed at the conference.
The targets set at the end of the COP must be by consensus, and all countries have the right to vote. Although decisions of this type require discussions throughout the year, memorandums are usually finalized and signed at the COP. During the COP, there are events that occur simultaneously every day. The conference is divided into two main regions: blue and green.
• The Blue Zone is where political negotiations and diplomatic meetings take place. It is administered directly by the United Nations.
• The Green Zone focuses on panel discussions for the general public, discussions promoted by NGOs and even cultural activities.
