On the eve of another continental decision, goalkeeper Waverton once again showed why he is considered one of the great leaders in the Palmeiras squad on Friday (28/11). Even with a hand injury, the archer confirmed that he was ready to help the team in the Libertadores final and reinforced the spirit of dedication that has dominated the team throughout the season. The tournament will be held on Saturday (11/29) at 6 pm in Lima, Peru.
He said, “In a match like this, any player goes to the field with an (injured) hand, foot, or anything. Our goal is to strive for the title.”
The goalkeeper stressed that regardless of Abel Ferreira’s selection for the squad, everyone is prepared and committed. He said: “Whoever entered and whoever entered after him entered with an exciting spirit.”
Weverton also stressed that the build-up to the final is not limited to the last few days. For him, the team has been building this journey since its debut in the competition, also in Lima, against Sporting Cristal. “It was a mountain. Sometimes it was comfortable, sometimes it was difficult, sometimes it was unbelievable. But we overcame everything with a lot of work and grit,” he said.
In addition to his athleticism, the goalkeeper has shown pride in his roots. “If I can leave Acre, the neighborhood of Sobral, a place where football didn’t have a lot of expectations, then anyone can do it too,” he said inspiringly.
Palmeiras and Flamengo face each other, in the final of the Libertadores da América, on Saturday (29/11), at 6pm (Brasilia time), at the Monumental Stadium in Lima. The first four-time Brazilian champion of the competition will leave the duel between the two teams.
