When it comes to liver, fruit takes center stage. The expert highlights that medlar contains carotenoids, polyphenols, and triterpenes, which are substances capable of reducing oxidative stress and silent inflammation that affects liver cells.
“These antioxidants support the liver’s natural detoxification process and aid in fat metabolism, which helps prevent liver damage and conditions such as steatosis,” explains Paloma Coppini.
According to the expert, recent research also reinforces the potential of ursolic acid and other triterpenes found in the fruit, which have been studied for their anti-inflammatory and liver-protective effects.
He adds: “These compounds enhance the role of the medlar as an ally for metabolic health and overall balance of the body.”

Contraindications
Although safe for most people, Paloma recommends caution in some cases. In bouts of diarrhea, excessive consumption can aggravate the condition due to the high concentration of fibre.
He highlights: “People who are sensitive to more acidic fruits may experience stomach discomfort if they eat large amounts. Those with kidney problems should monitor potassium, even if the fruit is not rich in this mineral. The seeds should not be eaten.”
For those using GLP-1 analogues, such as Ozempic, the recommendation is to consume smaller portions to avoid nausea or bloating.
“In these cases, it is important to seek professional guidance to understand what can be included in the routine,” warns Paloma.
