The leader of the People’s Party, Alberto Núñez Viejo, confirmed on Wednesday that, after the Dana of October 29, he spoke with the state president, Carlos Mazón, before the head of the executive branch. Moreover, he confirmed that he also did other things before Pedro Sanchez himself, such as speaking with the president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García Peg, traveling to Letur (Albacete) and attending Secupi.
“I spoke with Mazzone before you, I spoke with Mr. Big before you, I went to Letur before you, I went to Sekopi before you,” Vigo shouted at the head of government in the plenary session of Congress.
However, the PP president said that “the problem with all this is that if it rains again with the same intensity” on October 29, 2024, “the same thing will happen again” because the government “for seven years” has deprived the Valencian community of “bread and salt” with regard to “water and hydraulic infrastructure.”
Sanchez accuses Figo of “lying”
Sanchez had previously accused the PP leader of “lying” about his conversations on Dana Day with the state president. Hence, he noted that Figo “stood up in Valencia on October 30 and said that he knew everything up to the minute” because “Mazzone informed him” in “real time” of Aldana’s development since the afternoon of October 29.
“But the question that we all have and that I now want to ask Mr. Figo is, if so, how do you explain then that the first call between you and the president of the Valencian Community was recorded at 9:27 pm on October 29, when most of the deaths had already occurred? Can you tell us?” he asked.
The Prime Minister asked if they had called him “from a phone booth.” “Are you not answering? I’m telling you, Mr. Figo. The explanation is that you lied. That you started lying on the 30th and did not stop lying throughout the following year,” Sanchez added, adding that “two weeks later Mazzone himself had to publicly admit” that “the protocols had failed.”
Sánchez stressed that the PP leader also “lied” on October 31 when he “said that AEMET and the Júcar Hydrographic Conference had not issued the relevant alerts, despite the fact that they had issued more than 62 notices and 194 electronic notices.”
Moreover, he confirmed that Figo “lied” on January 9, 2025 at an event with the mayors of the Popular Party in Valencia “when he said that Mazzone was doing a great job” or on April 18 and June 10 when he declared that the then state president “was revealing his face.”
“You say that Mr. Mazzone was revealing his face, even though it took half a year to meet the victims and almost a year to conduct an interview. Tell me, Mr. Figo, if Mazzone performed so well, why did you confirm last week that his resignation was the right decision? Why do you now support his departure? Did you lie for a whole year or are you lying now?” Feijóo asked.
“I ask you to clarify what you spoke with Mazzone the day before.”
In his turn to conclude Wednesday’s appearance in Congress, Sánchez said he “agrees” with ERC spokesman Gabriel Ruffian that Vigo “revealed here quite transparently, quite clearly” that he was “the first person to speak” with Mazzone.
“What I ask of you is to explain in front of your Excellency and in front of the public opinion that you spoke with Mr. Mazzone the day before, and what you informed him, when you said that you were the first person to go to Secope,” Sánchez said, concluding that “all citizens” and deputies “have the right to know.”
