The cup is damaged during the celebration that brought together more than 250,000 red and black people in the streets of central Rio
Amid the euphoria that followed Flamengo’s fourth Libertadores title win this Sunday (30), fans and journalists realized that the cup had simply broken. The overall image of the player, at the top of the cup, was missing a piece, and someone patched it up with tape.
Even with this “elegant problem”, the players, the board and, above all, Flamengo fans celebrated intensely in the streets of downtown Rio de Janeiro. About 250,000 fans left their homes to participate in the celebration. But the party ended on a sad note: a riot in which the police participated while breaking up the celebrations.
Flamengo won its fourth title in the Libertadores Championship, defeating Palmeiras 1-0 in the final, last Saturday evening (29), in Lima (Peru). Before that, Rubro Negro had defeated Internacional, Estudiantes (Argentina) and Racing (Argentina) in the previous stages. In the group stage, the team led by Filipe Luis faced difficulties, but nevertheless advanced to second place in a group that also included Central Cordoba (Argentina), LDU (EQU) and Deportivo Tachira (VEN). Furthermore, the top three reached 11 points, and Florida secured the seed thanks to goal difference.
Shortest party
It is worth noting that Flamengo also cut short the title celebration due to the Brazilian League. The club needs to be 100% physically ready in preparation for the match against Ceara, a confrontation that could confirm the victory of the red and black, on Wednesday (3/12), at 9:30 pm, at the Maracanã stadium, in the framework of matchday 37.
Flamengo secures the title with a simple victory and/or if Palmeiras stumbles when Atlético MG visits, on the same day and time. After facing Alvinegro, Villa will face Mirasol in the final round of the tournament on 12/7. Finally, up to three Intercontinental matches will be played, between 10 and 12/17 in Qatar.
