Gabriel Bortoletto was involved in an accident on his Formula 1 debut at Interlagos. Still in the car, he blamed Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin. He later said that he had witnessed “the worst day of his life” after withdrawing from the race at his home.
“Hiking pushed me off the trail. It turned around like I wasn’t there,” Bortoletto said. After that, the Brazilian got into the organization’s car and left the track.
The Sauber driver crashed into the firewall after colliding with the rear wheel of Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin, in a duckbill, just before the climb onto the main straight.
He said: “It’s difficult, because it’s in my house, in front of my country, in front of my family. It’s definitely the worst day of my life, to be honest. We always want to represent our country, but this is part of the learning process. I will keep working, and God willing, next time it will be better.”
After that, Bortoletto tried to tone things down. “I’m not going to come here and point the finger at him, or at myself, whatever. I passed Colapinto, I was side by side with Stroll, he was in the solid complex, he had less traction,” he explained.
This was Bortoletto’s second accident this weekend. On Saturday (8), he lost control and crashed hard on the last lap of the race, at the end of the main straight.
Although she emerged from the accident unharmed, the car was severely damaged. Sauber was unable to make the necessary repairs so that the Brazilian could participate in the qualifying session. Therefore, the choice was to start from the pits.
Lando Norris was the winner of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix on Sunday (9). The McLaren driver continued his lead in the championship. Kimi Antonelli, of Mercedes, and Max Verstappen, of Red Bull, completed the podium in second and third places, respectively.
