The hikers were wet and had symptoms of hypothermia due to the wind, the blizzard and the snow that had fallen during the night, so GREIM was activated in El Barco de Ávila, which moved overland to the Gredos platform, the starting point of the intervention.
At 6:15 am, the team began approaching on foot towards the area where the mountain climbers were located. The temperature at that time was one degree Celsius, with strong winds, a blizzard, and snow, which led to a thermal sensation of several degrees below zero, according to Civil Guard sources.
Furthermore, a foot of fresh snow made progress difficult, masking the terrain and making the terrain very slippery. After a complex march through exposed areas and icy snow slopes, mountain specialists located the victims at 8:50 am.
The mountaineers were not injured, although they showed clear symptoms of hypothermia in their hands and feet.So they were provided with warm clothes and hot drinks, and after that, the landing began to promote thermal recovery through movement.
Fog and terrain conditions complicated the landing, but the team was able to plot a safe route avoiding the icy parts. Finally, at 10:30 a.m., the group arrived at the Gredus platform, where the mountaineers parked their car.
After verifying that their condition was good, those rescued reported that they did not need medical assistance and continued on their own, until the rescue operation ended around 12:00 noon.
