Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard said that French President Emmanuel Macron, who met with farmers on Wednesday (11/12/2025), informed them that the draft agreement between the European Union and Mercosur “as it stands today, will receive a very firm rejection from France.”
Guinevar, who also participated in the meeting held in Toulouse, southern France, said, “France cannot currently ratify the draft agreement with the Mercosur countries because (…) it does not protect the interests of our farmers.”
The official said, “It cannot be accepted” that “products and foods are produced or imported on European soil that do not respect the rules that we impose on our producers.”
On Wednesday, about 300 farmers asked Macron for clarifications regarding the free trade agreement with Mercosur (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay), after the president confirmed last week that he saw positive prospects for signing that agreement.
“The president pledged today not to sign Mercosur until it includes provisions that should be implemented,” said Jean-Marie Driat, president of the Regional Confederation of Agricultural Operators’ Unions, which opposes the treaty as a whole.
