Madrid, November 30 (European Press) –
The National Electoral Council of Honduras (CNE) has officially announced the beginning of voting day for Sunday’s general elections in which the country’s new president will be elected.
Voting began at 7:00 AM (2:00 PM in mainland Spain) after an event with CNE President, Ana Paula Hall, and Owner-Manager Marlon Ochoa.
The absence of one of the National Electoral Council’s advisors, Cosette López Osorio, who reported threats and the presence of supporters of the ruling Free Reconstruction (PLR) party in the electoral college chosen to open the vote is notable.
He explained on his X account: “Due to security recommendations and in order not to compromise my integrity, I will not attend the opening ceremony on Election Day. Protecting my life and the life of my family is not an act of fear: it is an act of responsibility.”
More than six million Hondurans are invited to elect the next head of state, 128 regular and 128 alternate deputies for the National Congress, 20 regular and 20 alternate deputies for the Central American Parliament (Parlasín), 298 mayors, 298 vice-mayors, and 2,168 councilors.
The presidential candidate is mainly competed by the official candidate Rexy Moncada (Liber), Nasri Asfora (National Party, far right), and Salvador Nasrallah (Hizb ut-Tahrir, right).
Moncada has already exercised his right to vote. She announced from the voting center in the Tegucigalpa neighborhood in western Central America: “I am already a winner. We have already won. We have survived the weapons of 2009, the fraud of 2013 and 2017, and we defeated the dictator in 2021 with Xiomara, and today the people will continue to lead the way.”
“People should take advantage of the civil celebration. Everything is peaceful in the 18 provinces. We must pay attention to how the process develops,” he added.
The hectic election campaign was characterized by accusations of electoral fraud in a country that has historically suffered from corruption and drug trafficking.
Honduras’ electoral legislation does not take into account the runoff number, so the candidate who receives the most votes will be the next tenant of José Cecilio del Valle’s palace, the presidential residence.
