Sports Editorial, November 27 (EFE).- Welshman Geraint Thomas, 2018 Tour winner and recently retired from the professional peloton for the Ineos Grenadiers, has been appointed race director of the British team.
Thomas, one of world cycling’s most respected and decorated cyclists, will leave the peloton to take on this new leadership role at Ineos Grenadiers.
He will work closely with Sir Dave Brailsford, Dr. Scott Drewer and the rest of the management team, providing input on race strategy, recruitment, development and competition preparation.
With more than two decades of experience at the highest level and having been with the team since its inception, Thomas has been a key player in many crucial moments. The career of the Welshman, who retired at the age of 39 with 25 victories as a cyclist, includes a victory in the Tour de France in 2018, multiple Grand Tour podiums and stage race victories, in addition to two Olympic gold medals with the British team.
According to an Ineos note, “His appointment reflects the team’s long-term commitment to building from within, leveraging their vast knowledge of the sport and what it takes to win, for the benefit of their fellow Grenadiers.
“This team has been my home since day one, and taking on this role is the natural next step. I have learned a lot from the people around me, both fellow riders and staff, and now I want to continue building on our amazing past successes into the future,” said Thomas.
The double Olympic champion and three-time world champion in the pursuit will try to “help the next generation step up and continue to lead the team towards our mission of winning Grand Tours again.”
“The Grenadiers will continue to compete with determination, humility and a commitment to excellence, and I am excited to help shape that future,” he concluded. Evie
