Gilberto Gil pays tribute to Jimmy Cliff after the artist’s death

Gilberto Gil used social media to pay tribute to Jimmy Cliff, one of the biggest names in reggae history, who died at the age of 81.

“Jimmy Cliff has and will continue to influence my music. Thank you so much,” Gilberto wrote in the caption of a video posted on Instagram.

The two singers shared the stage on a tour in Brazil in 1980, which filled stadiums in five capitals: Belo Horizonte, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, El Salvador, and Sao Paulo.

Jimmy Cliff had a strong connection to Brazil. The connection was so great that he released the album Jimmy Cliff in Brazil in 1968. The album included English versions of songs such as Andança by Edmundo Soto, Paulinho Tapajós and Danilo Caimi.

Furthermore, he lived in El Salvador and maintained a relationship with the Brazilian visual artist Sonia Gomez. From this union was born Nabiya B, an actress and singer who is now building an international career.

In the 1980s, he was in a relationship with journalist Harumi Ishihara, who decades later would star in Big Brother Brasil 16. The two even lived together for a while in Jamaica, and she even appeared in one of his segments recorded in Rio de Janeiro.
