On Saturday 29 November, Granada joined the club of large cities that decorate themselves and, above all, light up to announce Christmas. Plaza del Carmen, where the city hall is located, was packed to enjoy the show, which was certainly more than that … Amazing than in previous versions.
From today until January 6, Granada will be illuminated by approximately two and a half million points of light. To be more precise, 2,458,956which took effect at 8:30 p.m. In an event that included chants, dancing, Chinese shadows and a visual story that culminated in artificial snow falling on the square.
The city’s mayor, Marivran Carazo, pressed the power button with children from the Límite Intelligence Association and described the night as “magical” and which marks the beginning of the most comprehensive, sustainable and distributed Christmas lighting in recent years.
Of the approximately two and a half million light points, 1,413,618 light points illuminate the center and 1,045,338 light points, all equipped with low-consumption LED technology that allows significant energy savings. The total installed power is 198,148 watts, thanks to the exclusive use of highly efficient LED and strip systems.
Among the most notable developments are the comprehensive decoration of the Plaza del Carmen – including the illuminated lining of 15 trees and new canopies on the facade of City Hall – as well as the complete renovation of areas such as Puerta Real, Catholic Kings, Capuchins, Navas, Ricargas, Gran Via, San Juan de Dios, or Angel Janevite. New decorations are also being launched in Alhondega, Puentezuelas, Messones, San Jerónimo and Avenida de García Lorca, while emblematic spaces such as Plaza Nueva display a new 16.8-metre-tall 3D fir tree.
Puerta Real, the center of Granada, is already lit up as well
Additionally, Paseo del Salón includes laser lighting in the trees, and Paseo del Violón has an oversized, illuminated portal for a nativity scene. In the neighborhoods, where more than 324 light arches have been installed, balanced lighting is ensured that brings Christmas closer to all neighborhoods of the city.
The Christmas Program in Granada invites residents and visitors to experience Christmas in the street and enjoy attractions such as the small Ferris wheel in Plaza Pep Rambla, electric slides, the large illuminated ball or the Santa Claus Christmas Train, in addition to the activities of the Inverland Village, the ice skating rink, the illuminated nativity scene and performances by children’s and youth choirs in different parts of the center in the coming weeks. In addition to this, the opening of the municipal nativity scene on December 3, the themed markets for the monastery’s sweets and handicrafts, nativity scenes, the nativity scene competition route and major events such as the Royal Postman, the Royal Herald, and the Three Kings Parade.
“Granada is full of tradition, culture, music and art. “Now we invite you to make this magic your own and enjoy it with family, friends and, above all, with the little ones,” said Marifrane Carazo. The City Council stressed that tonight’s large participation confirms the success of this year’s Christmas model, which aims to boost local trade, enhance the cultural offer and transform Granada into a large Christmas space, lively, welcoming and full of activity until the arrival of the Three Wise Men.
The lights will remain on from 6:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at the center, extending until 3:00 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and the day before, and until 5:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve; In the neighborhoods, it works from 6:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., with an extension until 1:00 a.m. on weekends and until 3:00 a.m. on the nights of December 24 and 31. In addition, Plaza del Carmen presents its light show and Christmas carols every day in three shows: 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m. And 9:00 pm.
