FIBA World Rankings 2027 – Europe -Groups_Round_Third – day 1

Spain began Chus Mathieu’s reign as coach on a comfortable note, beating a weakened Denmark to open the qualifying stage on the way to the 2027 World Cup in Qatar. A middle-class team, without Euroleague men (except Almansa, released by Madrid) or those playing in the United States, registered the win without sweating too much before receiving Georgia on Sunday in Tenerife, after its surprise defeat to Ukraine in Tbilisi (79-92) despite relying on Shengelia and Shermadini, from Tenerife. Jaime Fernandez (15 points) and rookie Osobor (12 and 8 rebounds) stood out in the statistics.
Alberto Diaz, Jaime Fernandez, Santi Yusta, Danny Diez, and Fran Guerra. Chus Mathieu loaded his first quintet with all the lines he had at hand. It only took a few seconds for the point guard and captain to steal the ball and Guerra fished out the first points under the rim. Alberto Diaz missed the last European Championship due to injury and now returns in search of lost ground without abandoning an iota of his identity: the Andalusian defensive work gave the team the foundation on which it began to move. He has the support of Jaime Fernandez, another European champion in 2022 who wants to return to the spotlight. And gunner Santi Yusta, ACB’s top scorer, a man with pockets full of points. Spain took the first advantage against Denmark, which succeeded in shooting. Chus Mathieu updated Meccano first with Cárdenas and newcomer Osobor and soon after with other pieces to draw a new quintet and maintain the speed of circulation and transitions. Osobor looked big and strong on the offensive rebound, and the Spanish team reached the first half ahead despite some defensive concessions and little external success (23-25).
Spain discovered the bonds between new children in the family. Chus Mateo employed his 12 boys and the glue was once again Alberto Díaz, the best reflection of the union’s spirit. The team covered the water leak, although it was difficult to find some clarity in the attack in a thicker section. A couple of triples that do not touch the edge symbolize jam. Denmark was not the toughest opponent either and in that exchange Spain increased their lead before the end of the first half thanks to Jaime Fernandez’s wrist: 33-45.
Resorting to the trio and the size of Larsen was a weak solution for Denmark, a team that has never played in a World Cup and, like Spain, is devoid of its men in the EuroLeague. Cardenas and Osobor, the only ones called up and active from the ACB (in Greece and Germany, respectively), showed quick hands for takeaways and legs to connect on the counter-attack. Almansa has also made progress in the training he needs to deal with senior players at the club and in the national team. And Luis Costa, a 32-year-old newcomer, has put on weight (47-60).
Waiting for the strongest bone that is Georgia, despite its slide, Spain still had to roll up its sleeves in the last quarter to kill the game, burdened by a brace that conceded too much and lost some fluidity in front of the board. Osobor’s boost was good news for the team, ending this start on the fast track to the World Cup.
