Actor James Pickens Jr (featured image)The Grey’s Anatomy star revealed that he has prostate cancer. The 73-year-old artist said that the disease is hereditary in his family, so he was not surprised by the diagnosis.
“This is not the news anyone wants to hear, but honestly, prostate cancer runs in my family. My father had it. He had a lot of brothers, and many of them had it too. I would be surprised if I didn’t get it,” he told the Black Health Matter portal.

Grey’s Anatomy sympathizes with ALS diagnosis: ‘Fight to the end’
The actor, who plays Richard Webber in 22 seasons of the medical series, said he was diagnosed with the condition earlier this year. The cancer had not yet spread, so he underwent surgery to remove the prostate. “We were able to detect the problem very early because you were running tests,” he warned.
James also said that although members of his family have contracted the disease, “no one has died from it.”
He added: “I have a cousin who is 90 years old, and he is still alive, by the way. He had the disease, his son had it as well, and some of his brothers had it as well. No one has died from it, as far as I know.”
