Although hair loss is a complaint traditionally associated with male aging, it is now a reality for a large number of women, and has a profound impact on self-esteem and quality of life. In Brazil, the number of women seeking treatments, including hair transplantation, has increased by 16.5% in one year, according to the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), indicating a growing demand for solutions.

For Leonardo Amarante, doctor and specialist in hair restoration and transplantation, it is necessary to demystify hair loss and understand that it is always a symptom of an internal imbalance. Moreover, the specialist lists the five most common causes of hair loss in women, warning that the solution begins with the correct diagnosis.
The main cause of hair loss, according to Amarante, is hormonal changes. “This can happen after childbirth, during menopause or even when contraception is stopped. This difference disrupts the hair cycle, causing the strands to enter a phase of severe hair loss,” explains the doctor.
Subsequently, physical or emotional stress appears as a major trigger for what is called telogen effluvium. “Stress is the second factor. The problem, whether physical or emotional, can cause what we call telogen effluvium. It’s as if the body is saying: ‘Now is not the time to produce hair, it’s time to survive.’
Still according to the doctor, another determining factor is nutritional deficiency. Hair, being the second fastest growing tissue in the body, requires raw materials rich in nutrients. “A low level of iron, zinc, vitamin D and biotin, all of this interferes with hair growth. Therefore, it is necessary to follow a balanced diet and the correct supplements if necessary,” notes Leonardo Amarante.
For example, iron deficiency (iron deficiency anemia) affects approximately 30% of women of reproductive age in Latin America and is a classic cause of falls.
Scalp diseases
Scalp diseases constitute the fourth category of causes, which includes inflammatory conditions or autoimmune diseases that can directly affect the hair follicles. The doctor says: “There are many diseases that can lead to increased hair loss, and require diagnosis by a specialist.”
Finally, genetic factors constitute the fifth most common cause, which is the famous androgenic alopecia in women. For Leonardo Amarante, this occurs when “the follicular unit undergoes miniaturization due to a hormonal factor, namely hair thinning.”
In the face of such a complex and multi-factorial situation, Amarante emphasizes that the development of hair medicine today offers a wide range of solutions. From cutting-edge clinical treatments, such as using medications to stop hair loss, to more advanced treatments such as hair transplantation itself.
The specialist also ends by warning about the dangers of self-medication. “It is important to understand that each cause has a different treatment. Therefore, do not use ‘friend’s shampoo’ or ‘vitamins from the Internet’. Hair loss may look the same, but the cause is different. Seeking out a specialist is the first step towards successful treatment,” concludes Leonardo Amarante.
