Former Minister of the Institutional Security Office (GSI), General Augusto Heleno, told a Federal Supreme Court (STF) hearing that he was arrested at his daughter’s home and that he was suffering from illnesses and using medications. But the soldier was not informed that he had Alzheimer’s disease.
Arrested to serve the 21-year prison sentence set by the Ministers of the First Committee, Heleno reported that he was suffering from illnesses and taking several medications. The defense requested that the session and its recording remain confidential.
As it turns out CapitalsHeleno informed the army that he had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease since 2018. This information became public during a medical examination conducted at the Planalto Military Command, in Brasilia, where he is being held.

Defending General Augusto Heleno expresses his “indignation” after the arrest
Reporting pre-existing diseases and signs of physical injuries, Heleno announced that he “suffers from Alzheimer’s dementia that has been progressing since 2018, with recent significant memory loss, constipation and hypertension, and is under drug therapy (polypharmacy).”
From this information, it is clear that Heleno actually contracted the disease and served as GSI Minister during the four years of Bolsonaro’s government while undergoing treatment.
Prison routine
The force adds that the generals’ routine will follow the rules set for the detention of military personnel. The cells prepared by the army are located inside the center and contain beds, bathrooms and air conditioners. If there is a warrant, they can also have a TV and a minibar.
For the first time in the country’s history, four-star generals have been arrested on charges of attempted coup. The first commission of the STF condemned the generals for being part of the “critical core” of an armed criminal organization aimed at preventing the president-elect from taking office in 2022.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, Heleno and Paulo Sergio Nogueira were part of the nucleus that coordinated actions for the violent abolition of the democratic rule of law. The crimes charged include attempted coup, qualifying damages, criminal organization, and deterioration of listed property.
