How the anti-drone weapon used by the National Front works after Bolsonaro’s arrest

The anti-drone weapon used by the Federal Police (PF) to bolster security in the outer zone of the Federal Police Control Authority, in Brasilia, after the arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is known as the Tactical DroneGun.

The equipment weighs about 7 kg, contains directional antennas, a visual and audio control panel for precise guidance, as well as an anti-drone gun.

This type of device is used to prevent flights into restricted areas and reduce the risk of entry by unmanned equipment.

The equipment was recorded by photojournalist Brenno Esaki, from Metropolis, at the moment an agent removed the weapon from inside an official vehicle.

How it works

This technology is able to identify drones by frequencies and radio waves. When a suspicious drone is located, the weapon intercepts the command signal and takes control of the device.

From there, a Tactical DroneGun operator takes control of the suspect drone, and is able to force it to land immediately or force it to return to the starting point. In the case of the second option, it is possible to determine the identity of who is flying the drone.

This technology is already being used in São Paulo prisons to prevent factions from throwing mobile phones and drugs into prison units, and was also used during the COP 30 in Belém (Pennsylvania).

The international conference required the assembly of a powerful air defense system, coordinated by the PF at the Center for Integrated Remotely Piloted Aircraft Control and Countermeasures (CIC-ARP/CM), with the participation of the Army, Navy, Air Force and State Security Forces.
