“I saw he wasn’t moving.”

The Brazilian’s son-in-law, Yuri Pereira Botelho, told the American press that the family is trying to figure out how to return his body to the American state of Minnesota. The Brazilian, who was also a US citizen and lived there, died on Wednesday after being struck by lightning while hiking in Peru. Brett Skoog said that Kelsey, Yuri’s wife, noticed through data from an electronic device the moment her husband was exposed to the electrical storm.

Kelsey was watching the movement of the clock and saw that it was not moving, Skoog said, in statements reported by CBS News. “Your family will miss you very much, especially your son,” he added as he said goodbye to Yuri during the interview.

Former Chancellor of São Mateus (Spain), Chiquinho Botelho, known as Chiquinho da Caixa, shared with his followers the last photo taken by his son Yuri, with his grandson, just over a year old, on his lap.

Yuri lived in the United States for seven years. During a trip with his family to the Latin American country, the engineer decided to hike through the mountains of Cusco with his friend James Alexander Fernandez, 41 years old. The couple was surprised by an electrical storm.

Mourning the loss of his relative and grateful for messages of condolence and affection from friends and relatives, Cecchino posted a photo of Yuri with his son on his lap – according to the former advisor, “saying goodbye” to the child to move on.

The former advisor wrote: “As a gesture of gratitude for the displays of love and affection towards us on this very dramatic day in our lives, I share the last recorded photo of my son Yuri alive, saying goodbye to his son so he can continue on the path. Thank you who, with your prayers, have given me the strength to continue.”

Cicinho declared his love for his son and said goodbye to him in the mail.

“God who gave us Yuri’s life for 36 years. Have mercy my love. How happy I was when I said I loved you every time we communicated,” he wrote.

Local police told Yucatan Local Portal that the couple climbed to an altitude of 4,237 meters above sea level, with Peruvian guide Dani Peralta, and then descended by bike. The storm began after the group reached the summit, according to the press vehicle.

Local authorities received an emergency alert. A police team was called. Agents found Peralta without serious injuries, then found Yuri’s body. Fernandez was found injured on the side of the road and taken to the regional hospital, according to the police station in the city of Urisk.

The family decided to cremate Yuri’s body in Peru before transporting the ashes to the US state of Minnesota, where he lived.
