The rapporteur of the nomination of Jorge Messias for a seat on the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in the Committee on the Constitution and Justice (CCJ) of the Senate, Weverton Rocha (PDT-MA), will request a vote in favor of approving the nominee of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT).
to CapitalsThe Deputy Prime Minister of the Workers’ Party government stated that Messias “meets all the necessary requirements to hold this position.” “I will do everything I can to help you,” the parliamentarian declared.
The senator from Maranhão indicated that he will submit the report next week, with a positive opinion on the candidacy of Mesías, who is trying to obtain the votes of at least 41 senators to be able to form the Supreme Court Commission.
Messias still has a long way to go in the Senate before the hearing scheduled for December 10. In the Senate, it must be approved by a simple majority, that is, more than half of the members of the collective body. Then it goes to the plenary session, where it needs an absolute majority.

There are still doubts about Messias’ approval of the STF. Last week, the current Attorney General of the Federation went on a round of talking and “kissing hands” to convince senators to vote for him.
Messias opened the speech through the brief led by Gilberto Casab, the second largest group in the House of Representatives, which includes 13 parliamentarians. On Tuesday night (11/25), Mesías met with the President of the International Court of Justice, Senator Otto Alencar (PSD). On Wednesday (26), he met with Senator Elisian Gama, also from the Social Democratic Party.
On Thursday (28), he met with the rapporteur of his case at the International Court of Justice. They spoke of resistance, mostly from the right wing, to approval of the nomination. They talked about the fact that the government has not yet sent the nomination letter to the Senate.
Despite Messias’ nomination, the senators and the president of the Senate itself, Davi Alcolombre (Uniao Brasil-AP), did not hide their favoritism for Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), who previously headed Congress. Frustrated, he said he had no intention of running in the 2026 elections. Lula wanted him to try to join the Minas Gerais government.
