“If I hadn’t left half an hour earlier, I would have died too,” says the Cefet employee

The attack on two women inside a unit at the Federal Center for Technological Education (CEVET) Celso Soco da Fonseca, on Friday (28) afternoon, has left the school community in mourning and shock. For another employee at the organization, who preferred not to identify herself, the feeling is that she may also have been the target of the shooting, because she felt persecuted for some time by the suspect, who was her co-worker at the time.

He pursued me, monitored my entry into school and the sector, and did not approve of the way I worked. He says: If I had not left half an hour before yesterday, I would have died too.

According to the woman, the previous positions of the person accused of shooting, João Antonio Miranda Tello Ramos Gonçalves, were not directed only at her. She noted that the man had shown signs of emotional deterioration, isolation, and rigid behavior for years. But the behavior would have worsened in recent years:

— He became very strict, persecuting his colleagues and even his superiors. Everything was a reason – when they arrived at school, how hard they worked, pedagogical decisions – he says.

This case occurred in the Chivete Maracana unit, in the northern region of Rio. After shooting two of his co-workers, the man committed suicide. Teacher Alan de Souza Pedrotti Matos, who was shot in the head and shoulder, and school psychiatrist Liz Costa Pinheiro, who was shot in the head and chest, were taken to the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital, in central Rio, but they did not resist. The case is being investigated by the capital’s homicide police station.

The general administration of the school announced, in a memorandum, a period of official mourning for five days in the institution, starting from December 1, 2025.

The suspect claimed that he was subjected to moral harassment in court proceedings

After being suspected of killing two colleagues at the Federal Center for Technological Education (Cefet) and then himself, João Antonio Miranda Tello Ramos Gonçalves filed a lawsuit against the union four months ago seeking compensation for moral harassment at work. The Federal Court closed the case last Tuesday without ruling on the merits because it recognized that Cevit had administrative independence and the union should not be part of the lawsuit.

According to the decision, João Antonio said that he had been a government employee since 2014, and three years ago he was transferred to another sector against his will. He claimed that in the new sector, he “became a victim of administrative retaliation, by being relieved of his duties, excluded from decision-making spaces, and gradually isolated in the work environment, a situation that led to his mental health being jeopardized.”

The man was also suspended from his duties for 120 days, and upon his return to his position, he was sent to a third department.

“Undisputed medical reports and certificates indicate the deterioration of his health condition as a direct result of the work environment to which he is currently exposed, and his return to DIREN (Board of Education) or transfer to DIAPE/DEMET (Department of Educational Support) is not only a recommended measure, but a necessary and urgent measure to avoid irreversible damage to his mental health,” the man’s defense claimed in the lawsuit.
