The first week of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), in Belém, was marked by the circulation of fake news and out-of-context information about the summit. Posts from anti-government profiles contradict official information, raise doubts about ongoing negotiations and focus left-wing criticism.
- COP 30 Newsletter: Live from Belém, the GLOBO team sends news about the World Climate Conference; subscription
- In a letter to the Lula government: The United Nations points to structural flaws and demands a plan to deal with security at the Thirtieth Conference of the Parties
The circulation of these publications reinforces the importance of the launch, this week, by the Conference of the Parties of an intergovernmental unity charter against misleading information, called the “Global Initiative for Safety in Climate Change Information.”
A poll obtained by Globo, and predicted by writer Anselmo Joyce, showed that on the first day of the summit, last Monday, more than 1,114 entries were classified as false. The monitoring, conducted by the artificial intelligence platform Tistto, analyzed ten thousand posts on the social networks TikTok, Instagram and X.
Among them, for example, there are posts indicating that the beginning of the event coincided with the arrival of a hurricane in Paraná due to a “divine warning” or posts showing an image of Lula “talking to the wall” in a speech he gave at the conference, created using artificial intelligence tools.

There are also manipulated photos and videos that mimic a champagne toast between Lola and Jania on the yacht used as accommodation in Belém or a boat marked COP 30 catching fire in the city’s harbour.

There are also posts highlighting existing infrastructure problems at venues hosting the event, such as air conditioning installations that broke down during the first days of the summit, as GLOBO showed. “A ballroom without air conditioning, FLOP30 really wants people to believe in ‘global warming’, no matter the cost,” said a post shared on X.
Other posts also criticize the use of diesel to maintain the power generators used at the event. “They promised 100% renewable fuel, and produced smoke, leaks and hypocrisy,” São Paulo City Council member Robinho Nunes (Uniao-SP) wrote in a post. He added: “The left is saving the planet by polluting the Amazon.” Petrobras said in a statement that it is supplying the event with 10% renewable fuel.
Posts are also circulating on social media criticizing the storming of the event facilities last Wednesday, and the demonstration was attributed to allies of President Lula. “At the COP30, in Belém, indigenous people funded by leftist NGOs invaded the restricted area of the event, smashed everything and injured security guards, and no one spoke about the undemocratic actions,” federal MP Antonio Carlos Nicoletti (Uniao-RR) said in a comment to a video posted on his Instagram profile.
“A pathetic sight from the left at the COP30,” former São Paulo mayoral candidate Marina Helena (Novo-SP) also wrote when she shared excerpts of the demonstration on her social networks. “Invasion, terror and fracture cause terror in FLOP 30,” commented federal MP Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO) in an Instagram post.
In another post, the parliamentarian wrote that the United Nations “blew up” President Lula, after sending a message from the entity’s climate change arm demanding a plan for security handling during the summit.
When GLOBO contacted Gayer, he did not respond to questions sent by the reporting team. GLOBO is also trying to contact Nicoletti and Marina Helena.
