jaguar (Tiger Onka) are the largest cats in the Americas and a symbol of ecological balance. They once occupied the entire continent, from the southern United States to northern Argentina, but today their population is concentrated in the Amazon, the Pantanal and the remnants of the Cerrado and Atlantic forests.
Brazil is home to most of the world’s population of jaguars, and the Amazon is a major refuge for the species, with about 60% of individuals estimated to be in the country. Although it is difficult to obtain accurate numbers due to the elusive nature of the animal and the breadth of the biome, recent studies indicate that the Amazon rainforest may be home to between 10,000 and 17,000 individuals.
